Special Needs

Senior Greyhounds

Show Me Greyhounds specializes in helping special needs and senior Greyhounds.  Sometimes these Greyhounds get passed over for one reason or another because most adopters want young, healthy Greyhounds.  We feel these special needs and senior Greyhounds deserve a loving family and a couch of their own just as much as a young, healthy Greyhound does.

Senior Greyhounds are a true treasure of love.  They are very loving, sweet and are happy with the simple things in life.  Some have had a life of raising puppies and some have had a life full of racing.  Some have lived on farms just waiting for someone special to love them.  Their muzzle is turning white because of age.  Whatever the case, they deserve families that will love them, too.

Some seniors might need special medical care such as joint supplements or thyroid medicine and it's best to have medical check ups at least 4 times a year due to their ever changing bodies from age.  Most generally, adoption groups will designate a Greyhound as being a senior at the age of 9 years old or older.

Special Needs Greyhounds

Special Needs Greyhounds means they might have a physical or mental disability such as an amputation or separation anxiety.  Generally, it doesn't mean hundreds of trips to the veterinarian but special needs Greyhounds might require a few more veterinarian visits for check ups than young, healthy Greyhounds do.

Special needs can be described as a tripod (amputation of a limb), extremely shy, having separation anxiety (afraid of being separated from their owner), having a medical condition that can be treated through daily medication, having impaired sight or an eating disability such as mega-esophagus.  Although some might require a little more patience and understanding at first, you are guaranteed a life full of love once they receive your patience, love and understanding.

A special needs Greyhound can be any age.  They overcome their adversities in life and live a happy life in the care of a loving person.

Currently, we know of 3 special needs Greyhounds that will be available for adoption in the next few weeks.  They are not available at this present time due to ongoing medical care they are receiving for their medical problems.
