Making the World Safe
for Greyhounds
Greyhound Planet was started in 2002 by Therese Skinner, Founder and
Spokesperson for Greyhound Planet, when she heard about the Guidant Research
lab testing Greyhounds for a pacemaker study and Greyhounds being taken
illegally over the Alabama/Florida state line to be killed when they were no
longer making money for their owners on the race track.
Because of her passion to help Greyhounds all over the world, Therese wanted
desperately to help. She said she would do anything if it meant one more
Greyhound receiving medical care, food, and a loving permanent home.
Therese read an article in a Kentucky newspaper (sent to her by a friend)
about a local fundraiser for Greyhounds for a group called Homes for Hounds.
During this fundraiser, kids held bake sales, garage sales, sponsored
walks and went door to door to raise funds. She was inspired by this to get
others involved in a national effort to promote Greyhound adoption during
the same week only in their own back yards so to speak.
She forwarded her idea to Greyhound rescue groups and Greyhound adopters.
The feedback was overwhelming and very positive. The idea of making it
international came into play when the American European Greyhound Alliance,
who mainly works with the Irish Greyhounds and Galgos overseas, offered to
help by sharing web space for her idea and promoting it through national
media attention and advertisement. By the way, the word Galgo is Spanish for
Greyhound.
When PETCO and the PETCO Foundation heard about the event through a
volunteer, they offered support of the event nationwide. Greyhound Planet
Week is the only breed specific fundraising event that a nationwide pet
supply store hosts annually.
Therese never thought in her wildest imagination that her idea would have
these results. When she shared her idea with a couple of her closest
friends, their response was "Good luck." They've agreed they'll never doubt
an idea of hers again.
Therese said although it is hard work, she is very proud and the reward is
far more than she ever anticipated, especially when she shares her victory
with more than 350 Greyhound adoption groups all over the world, PETCO, the
PETCO Foundation and Greyhounds in general.
September 13th - 21st, 2008 will be the 7th annual fundraiser for Greyhound
Planet at all PETCO pet supply stores nationwide. Year to date, over
$865,000 have been raised by Greyhound Planet to benefit retired racing
Greyhounds in various adoption groups. The goal for 2008 is to raise at
least $135,000 to meet our grand total goal for the last 7 years of
1,000,000.00. Actually, we hope to exceed over 1 million dollars!
Please join us and other Greyhound lovers all over the world in celebrating
Greyhounds during Greyhound Planet in September each year!
